As you can see, the damage was awful. This is a picture of the First Baptist Church, a beautiful building, until this natural disaster. It took the surviving citizens years to try to restore Galveston to it's glory before the storm, but it still hasn't returned to it's former beauty. One of the problems is that when Galveston was recovering from the hurricane, Spindletop made Houston famous. It made everyone move there in search of the new "black gold". Galveston was no longer the main port, but resorted to being the summer getaway for Houstonians. Houston had completely replaced Galveston.
Another downfall for Galveston was that nobody wanted to move there anymore. They were afraid that another storm could hit again. In fact, most of the citizens moved out, relating Galveston with the sorrow of the lost of their loved ones. The remaining people wanted to restore Galveston to her former beauty, but couldn't raise the money, and felt shamed, asking for it. Slowly, though, bit by bit, Galveston got better.
