This is a picture of an orphanage just months before the hurricane. Although this building was very sturdy, all the people, nuns and children, perished except three boys who grabbed on to a branch that saved them.
The leaders of Galveston didn't make very good choices as to protecting the island. For example, they decided to pull up all the trees on the beach because they thought they were ugly. Had they not done that the trees would have protected the city from some of the storm surges. They also paid no attention to the fact that Indianola, another city in the gulf, was recently destroyed by a hurricane.
Besides that, Galveston was booming. It was the biggest and richest city in Texas, because it was the main port. The economy was great, and people would come from everywhere because it was said to have the most beautiful beach in the world. Immigrants wanted to move to Galveston because it was "the new New York."
It seemed to be perfect for everyone, the rich and the poor. Until... disaster struck!
